How Geothermal Energy is used

Three different types of plants can produce electricity from geothermal energy sources. The three types of plants used to produce energy are dry steam, flash, and binary. Dry steam plants take fractures in the ground and use it to directly run a turbine, which turns a generator. This generator in turn produces energy that is used within a power plant to provide electricity. Flash plants take hot water from the ground and allows the water to boil. Once the water boils, it rises to the surface and separates into vapor steam. This steam is then run through a turbine to create electricity. In binary plants, hot water runs through heat exchangers, which boils the liquid that turns the turbine.
